JOHN
COBURN
With an engineering degree from Penn State in Ceramic Science
and seven years of experience entertaining tourists at Opryland
U.S.A. making functional pottery, John Coburn brings a practicality
to the art of throwing on the wheel that not many potters exhibit.
Stoneware clay and oxidation firing provide a vehicle for glaze
experimentation resulting in a broad palette of colors not often
seen in down to earth utilitarian ware. Items for use in every
room of the house include food preparation, serving and storage
containers, dinnerware and table accessories, decorative vases
and candle holders, and bathroom accessories such as toothbrush
holders, lotion dispensers and soap dishes.
All pieces are finished in lead-free glazes, and can be used in
dishwashers, microwave and conventional ovens.
Prices range from under $10 to around $40 for most functional
pieces, with decorative works extending up into the lower hundreds.
Newest works include sculptural vases with thrown, altered and
carved appendages.
As a one man operation, a limited variety of items are displayed
at any one time, however twenty-five years of throwing experience
enable fulfillment of almost any custom orders.
